Guernsey offers a variety of superb anchorages, each with its own charm and characteristics. Remember to be mindful of the significant tidal range and strong currents in the Channel Islands.
Always consult up-to-date Admiralty charts or electronic navigation systems for the most accurate and safe anchoring information.
While staying overnight in one of Guernsey’s marinas or Alderney Harbour is often recommended for peace of mind, day visits to the smaller islands, bays, and beaches are highly encouraged.
Be aware that with a tidal range of up to 10m, flows that run at up to 4 knots, and changeable weather conditions, anchoring overnight in some bays is not recommended unless you are very experienced and certain of the conditions.
Many visiting yachts also choose to keep the boat in the Victoria Marina whilst they explore the other islands via local interisland ferry operators such as Herm Trident & Sark Shipping.
In contrast to the flat northern end of the island, Guernsey's south coast is rugged, with a fantastic cliff path linking breathtaking bays.
Just south of St Peter Port, Fermain is popular with locals and visitors. It’s sheltered from westerly winds and boasts a very good cafe and takeaway next to the slipway. The beach is quite steep and pebbly, but it’s a peaceful and convenient place to visit by boat. The route offers panoramic views of neighbouring Herm, Jethou, and Sark.

Anchoring: Anchor in the centre of the Bay if possible in 2-5m (LAT) of water, sand.
Situated immediately south of St Peter Port, Havelet Bay can be subject to congestion during peak times in summer, taking the overflow of yachts from St Peter Port. It is also subject to a high water swell in unsettled Atlantic weather and is only recommended during calm periods if a peaceful night at anchor is desired.
Approximate Position: 49∘27.0′ N,2∘32.5′ W
Important: Havelet Bay has subsea cables running along the seabed. These should be visible on all charts, and mariners are strongly advised to avoid anchoring over these cables.
Le Jaonnet and La Bette Bays in the North East corner of Icart Bay provide idyllic seclusion in calm light North-North East airs.
Approximate Position: 49∘25.6′ N,2∘34.6′ W (General area for these coves)
Anchoring: Anchor in 3.5-4m, sand. At the western side, Petit Bot valley has a stony picturesque cove with a Martello Tower. A close neighbour to the west with a more acceptable sandy beach is Portelet; it is possible to anchor South-West of the drying rock in 5m, sand.
Best enjoyed from half-tide down when a beach of fine sand is exposed. It can be reached by dinghy and is usually very quiet. A secure and peaceful spot to anchor and wait for the St Peter Port marina gates to open, though watch for swell if the wind is from the south or southwest.

Anchoring: A superb anchorage to be recommended during calm settled weather, or during winds from north through to east. Anchor in 2-5m (LAT), fine sand, North-East of Mouilliere.
On very low springs, it’s possible to walk or wade past rocky inlets to the atmospheric Moulin Huet Bay, Renoir’s favourite spot in Guernsey when he visited in 1883. VisitGuernsey has even created an official Renoir Walk here.
