Sea Safety

Safety Information : Guernsey Marinas

Your safety, and the safety of all marina users, is our top priority.

The following information outlines general safety guidelines and procedures based on best practices across the marina industry.

General Safety & Marina Conduct

  • Pontoons & Walkways : Pontoons can be slippery, especially in wet or icy conditions. Due to our large tidal ranges, the pontoon gangways can also be very steep at low water. Please wear appropriate footwear, avoid running , and keep walkways clear of equipment and materials.
  • Vessel Speed : Maintain a maximum speed of 4 knots while in the marina to prevent creating excessive wash.
  • Prohibited Activities : For everyone’s safety, swimming, fishing, scuba diving, sailing, and SUP are strictly forbidden within the marina. BBQs are also prohibited on boats, jetties, or pontoons due to fire risk.

Emergency Procedures

  • Reporting Incidents : Report all accidents, potential hazards, and defective or damaged marina equipment to the marina office immediately.
  • First Aid & Emergency Equipment : First aid is available from the marina’s reception. A defibrillator is also available at the marina office as well as a number of locations around St Peter Port Harbour. Familiarize yourself with the location of safety boxes, emergency ladders, fire extinguishers, and life rings on the pontoons. Use rescue equipment only in the event of an emergency and advise the marina office if you use it.
  • “Man Overboard” : In the event of falling into the water, shout for assistance and swim to the nearest safety ladder. If assisting someone who has fallen overboard, use onboard rescue equipment or help them to a nearby fixed ladder.
  • Evacuation : In the event of an evacuation, head immediately to the nearest Fire Assembly Point or, if the route is blocked, the nearest Water Evacuation Point. Follow instructions from marina staff, security, and emergency services.

Fire Safety

  • Onboard Safety : Install a smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector onboard and test it regularly. Check that your fire extinguishers and fire blanket are serviceable.
  • Raising the Alarm : In the event of a fire, raise the alarm by shouting “Fire, Fire, Fire,” evacuate the area, call 999, and then notify the marina office. Only attempt to fight the fire if it is safe to do so.

Electrical & Gas Safety

  • Electrical Leads : Have all electrical leads checked by a qualified person regularly. Use leads that are in good condition and only a single length (not connected in a chain).
  • Flammable Substances : Keep minimum stores of petrol, diesel, and gas on your vessel. Ensure all gas installations are in sound condition and checked regularly by a qualified contractor. Always isolate fuel and gas when leaving your vessel.
  • Fuel Berth : On the fuel pontoon, specific rules apply: no smoking or naked flames, and all mobile phones, radios, engines, and cooking appliances should be turned off.

Lithium-ion Batteries & E-bikes

The increasing use of lithium-ion batteries in e-bikes, e-outboards, and other devices presents a significant fire risk if not handled correctly. Lithium-ion battery fires can be intense and difficult to extinguish, making safety a priority.

  • Charging : Always supervise the charging of batteries and never leave them to charge unattended, especially not overnight. Use the manufacturer’s charger and power supply designed for that specific battery.
  • Storage : Store batteries in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Consider using a dedicated fireproof bag or box for added protection.
  • Damage & Disposal : Immediately stop using any battery that is damaged, swollen, or shows signs of overheating. Do not attempt to repair it. These batteries should be disposed of safely at a designated waste facility.

Keeping Children and Pets Safe

  • Supervision : Children should always be supervised, especially when near the water.
  • Lifejackets : Children should wear suitable lifejackets when near the water. It is also highly recommended that all persons, especially children under 16, wear a lifejacket on the pontoons.
  • Prohibited Items : Bicycles, scooters, and skateboards should not be used on the pontoons or jetties for the safety of everyone.
